Outdoor Japan Surf Article

A couple of months ago I wrote an article for Outdoor Japan on surfing in Misawa and the surrounding breaks. The article is called "get you fix on Route 338" which is a small  highway running along the east coast of Aomori Prefecture. This originally came in print form but now its all free on the internet for everyone to see. Have a look below and click on this LINK, to read it yourself. Thanks for the support.

Outdoor Japan, Surf Article

Officially a published writer and Photographer, or a Photojournalist.

Go pick up a copy of Outdoor Japan or go to www.outdoorjapan.com and order a copy of this months issue July/Aug 2010. The super cool thing about this Magazine, its both in English and Japanese for all articles. For surfers living near and around Tokyo there is a great Surf Guide for all seasons.

The article I wrote is called "get you fix on route 338" its a four page spread on surfing in and around Misawa, Japan. This is the first time that I have been Published and I am super stoked on how it turned out.

Bio inside..

I would show the rest of the article but, you will have to go out a buy a copy of Outdoor Japan to see what else is inside, or maybe in a month or so it will be available online.

Offshore Waves at 5.0

Yesterday brought strong winds from the west. Stiff offshore winds create amazing looking waves. Too bad we didn't have more swell? I love surfing on these kind of days. You can't see when your paddling into the wave... and when you duck dive through a bigger set and come out the other side, you can feel the rain pouring down from the spray of the waves. It always a great feeling from mother nature. Looking forward to Typhoon Season and more of the pristine offshore days.

Summer surf in Misawa

Yesterday we had lots of rain but also offshore winds in the afternoon. Nice little wedge on the inside.  This morning was lack luster with much smaller waves but still shred-able. And I guess everyone decided to start surfing again because there was way to many people in the water. See ya in the water.
Cheers!

Bed Kit Part II

Its done! Lets go camping. This new sleep machine will soon be our second home for the remainder of our time in Japan. Equipped with padded mattes that look like wood in 3 panels so they can easily be taken out and fit in the top box when needed. I am so stoked on how this came out. Thanks again to AG-san from 338 Surf for all the help with this project.  Look for more of the "man van"/ "surf sleep Machine"/ in future post as it will come in handy for our summer adventures. Do you think 2 humans, an  infant and medium size dog can all sleep back there? Soon to find out.

Down Days in Misawa, Japan

With warming temperatures and rain in the forecast, YES rain. We opted for some down days and touring around Misawa and Hachinohe. Climate change is definitely effecting Japan as well. For more on how to protect out winters go to POW and get involved.  On to what we did? Bars, Beach, Fish Market, Shinto shrine's, Buddhist Temples, Samurai Houses and Bamboo Forest. Not and any particular order.

Lets get lost drive...

So a couple of days ago we busted our dog templar out of prison, i mean kennel for a lets go "get lost drive." We just so happened to take the road directly to the Pacific ocean. One day prior to our "get lost drive" I stumbled into a local surf shop in Misawa called 338surf. I rapped out with the owner for a bit and he showed me a few spots on google earth of where to surf in the area. He told me in the winter "dry suites" are a must, if you want to surf? Yeah we'll see..I'm counting on riding a different kind of wave this winter.....ok back on getting lost. We took a left coming out of the main gate of the AF Base and followed it right to the Pacific Ocean. A five minute drive. Took a quick left when it dead ends and pulled it a small parking lot on the right and walked up over this grassy knoll and my eyes light up like christmas morning. It was offshore winds, sunny about chest to maybe shoulder high and this left was pealing off this jetty like it was Newport 54th street minus the crowds of course. I couldn't believe it? Surf this close to home? So hyped! But reality soon set in as my Boards are still in transport from the US. So to all my fellow surfers out there who are planning in coming to Japan for snowboarding...there is pretty good surf too. We are in the heart of typhoon season right now and it will continue until November. These typhoon produce great swell for the East coast of Japan much like Hurricane season for the East coast of the US. I will produce more once I actually get my boards and wet suits here.
